Territory and economy
Today’s Provence is part of the "Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur" administrative region, often referred to as PACA, one of the 21 regions of France, stretching from the Italian Border to the Rhone. The population is 4.7 million, and makes the PACA region the third most important in France. The regional capital, Marseilles, is France's second city (over 800 000 inhabitants) and most important port. With 1.6 million inhabitants, greater Marseilles is the second largest urban area in France.
The region is among the major economic hubs of the Mediterranean, and is particularly important in the sectors of telecommunications (the biggest telecommunications center in southern Europe), Microelectronics, oil and chemicals. The international project ITER is a large-scale scientific experiment that aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy. The project is developed with 6 countries and the EU in Cadarache, in the north of Aix-en-Provence. This long term project will weight a lot on the economy of Provence. Of course the tourism sector is not to be forgotten: Provence tours are appreciated by millions of people every year ! It is the 2nd most important tourist region in France.
